Where to begin!?!? This week was one of the longest weeks we have ever endured. Our family has been through some major ups and downs this week, both pregnancy and non-pregnancy related. Thankfully, things are starting to look up.
On Monday, my doctor's nurse called and scheduled my first 2 prenatal visits for October 6 and the 13. We are really looking forward to going in and learning so much about our little one. When I talked to the nurse, I had a few questions for her, one of them being whether or not I should be concerned about the cramping I had been experiencing. The regular nurse wasn't in that day. This nurse made some notes in my file and told me that if there was anything else I needed to know, Tammy, the other nurse, would call me back the following day. I never heard from Tammy.
Thursday morning, about 10:30, I got a phone call from Sam. He had just spoken with Tammy and was told that I needed to get in for 2 emergency ultrasounds, ASAP! Nothing like a little adrenaline rush...Thankfully, I had a grandparent volunteer in my classroom at the time. I told her what was going on and then ran off to find my boss. (Not only did I need to leave work, but I was supposed to be back there by 1:00 to leave for a teacher's training in Pocatello...) I vaguely explained the situation to my boss and he said to go ahead and leave. The grandparent finished my job for the day while I tried my best to calmly drive to the imaging place to meet Sam.
Upon arriving at the imaging place I felt a little nervous and very sick to my stomach. The nausea was unrelated to the nervousness. It was caused by the 22 oz. of water I had chugged during my 10 minute drive. Now, not only did I feel nervous and nauseous, I REALLY needed to go to the restroom. What an awful combination!
We got called back to the ultrasound room. The tech explained that she understood our anxiousness, but that she was not allowed to give us any information while she worked. She did answer our general questions, but didn't help to calm our nerves too much. When we finished, we were taken to a little waiting room where it seemed that we sat for eternity, (probably a whole 20 minutes). The radiologist reviewed my results and gave my doctor a call. We were told to head home and wait to hear from Tammy. Much to our liking, Sam's phone rang before we even reached our cars. Tammy asked to speak to me and told me the best news that I have ever heard: the ultrasounds looked perfectly normal! In order to take the situation as cautiously and seriously as the doctors felt was needed, I then agreed to drive to the hospital and go to the lab to get my blood taken. Tammy explained that by taking my blood twice within 48 hours they would be able to further verify that my pregnancy is progressing normally. Sam rushed to get me some lunch while I flew to the hospital, all the while calling work to let them know that I wouldn't make it back by 1:00.
I decided that I should go get blood drawn during lunch time every time I have to go because the lab was EMPTY! I was in and out within 10 minutes. I grabbed my lunch from Sam and called my mom to let her know I was coming to pick her up so we wouldn't miss our carpool for Pocatello, (luckily, they had agreed to wait for us).
Now, I knew my mom was going to wonder why in the world we were suddenly leaving later than planned. I was hoping no one at work would spill the beans because we don't want to tell our families until they are all together, which isn't until the 25. Thus, I did something I never do: lie. I told my mom I had a doctor's appointment that was just a check up and that everything was fine. (Maybe it was more of a fib, most of that is true, I suppose). I can't wait until we can tell everyone the whole story.
I went back in to the lab this morning and got the second round of blood drawing taken care of. I should have the results of this no later than Tuesday. We're continuing to pray that these results come back normal, just as the ultrasound results did. It is so wonderful to see the hand of God alive and at work in this little one's life!
